  • anna 3

“I was only 18 and just finished school, when my parents tried to send me away in the summer holidays to be forced into a marriage. I was terrified;  I didn’t want to leave my life in England, my friends, my family. I wanted to go to college and study  fashion and design. Why did they want me to marry a man I’d never met? It didn’t make any sense, I felt scared and alone.”

Freedom Charity rescued Anna who would have been subjected to daily rape and abuse.

My family told me it was normal. A rite of passage. When I was 8 my parents took me abroad and had me cut, it was the most painful thing in the world. When I was at secondary school Freedom Charity came and gave a talk on Female Genital Mutilation.

With Freedom’s support Grace was able to ensure the safety of her younger sisters so that they did not suffer the same fate. With your help we can end Female Genital Mutilation in our lifetime.

I still remember the day. I overheard my brother talking about me to my parents. My heart sunk when I heard him: “She’s becoming too western, send her back home and get her married, or else she will bring shame on the family”.

Sophia got in contact with Freedom through The Freedom Charity app and their professionals immediately set to work on making her safe.
